More jobs through public works programme

KZN's poorest will benefit from an expansion of the Expanded Public Works Programme

THE second phase of the COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) was launched last weekend, making available a further 6 000 jobs.

COGTA MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube made the announcement on Sunday at Indaka Local Municipality, in uThukela District.

The programme already employs 34 494 people in KZN and the additional jobs will be spread throughout the province over the 2016/17 financial year.

eThekwini Metro will benefit from the majority of the jobs, at 2 000, while Nkandla will get 100.

The municipalities of Newcastle, KwaSani, Hibiscus Coast, Richmond, uMngeni, uMshwathi, Hlabisa, Big 5 False Bay and eNdumeni will share the remaining 3 600.

According to Dube-Ncube, this programme has been a resounding success since the targeted participants, women and youth, have been able to put bread on their tables.

‘This programme is aimed mainly at alleviating poverty in our communities, with rural communities being the main target, as we understand they are the ones that have borne the brunt of poverty,’ she said.

In her address to the community, Dube-Ncube urged the community to ensure they use water wisely and report water leaks to ward councillors and municipalities.
