Tennis stars ace Laureus Awards

World's best athletes acknowledged for sporting achievements

AMERICAN tennis sensation Serena Williams celebrated a record-equalling fourth Laureus World Sports Award, when she was named Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year at the Berlin ceremony after a sparkling 2015, in which she won three Grand Slams.

Fellow tennis great Novak Djokovic was awarded his third and second consecutive award, when he was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.

The Laureus Spirit of Sport went to Johan Cruyff, who died in March. His son Jordi collected the award in memory of his dad.

The All Blacks rugby team picked up the Team of the Year award after their domination on the rugby field in 2015.

All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter picked up the Laureus Comeback of the Year Award, following his team’s Rugby World Cup success.

Germany’s Jan Frodeno, the first man to win both the Ironman World Championship and an Olympic triathlon gold medal, was presented with the Laureus Action Sports Award, while golfer Jordan Spieth won the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award.

Brazilian Paralympic swimmer Daniel Dias won his third Laureus Disability Award, and three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.
