THE positive intervention by rescue stakeholkders to prevent further drownings in the Bay Hall area is welcome news.

One cannot stand by every year and watch more children tragically losing their lives.

While the erection of more signage and a designated swimming area will assist going forward, the need for lifeguards during busy periods cannot be overstated.

Swimming in these areas are not encouraged, but the reality is that a large number of bathers flock to the Bay Hall area over weekends, during the festive season and especially on public holidays.

It is therefore essential to have lifeguards on duty to assist in emergency situations and prevent drownings.

The majority of bathers do not know of the dangers of the sudden sharp drop areas that have led to most of the deaths.

In addition to the other measures already tabled, the use of volunteer marshals during busy periods will lend a helping hand to lifeguards.
