IT boggles my mind that the IEC is unable to explain why there were missing or incorrect details on the voters’ roll during this weekend’s registration.
My physical address has not changed for the past 25 years and I have voted in every municipal election, so I was shocked to find that a wrong address appeared next to my name on the voters’ roll.
It was not my intention to check my registration, but at the last minute I popped into my voting station in Richards Bay to double check that I was on the roll.
There were also other voters whose physical addresses did not appear next to their names.
IEC officials were unable to give me an explanation and I had to re-register. But what about the millions of voters throughout the country who chose not to check their details, because nothing had changed since the last municipal election?
I hope this does not mean they will be turned away at the polls come 3 August.
There should be another voter registration weekend to sort out this mess.
The IEC needs to double check their database to ensure a free and fair election.
What happened to the information we provided when we registered before? This is not the fault of the electorate.
