Tragic death of local angler
Angling competition ends in heartache after the death of local fisherman Nigel Quaite

A LOCAL fisherman died after a fatal fall at the South Pier in the Richards Bay Harbour at around noon on Saturday.
Well known Empangeni resident Nigel Quaite was reportedly struck by a freak wave while fishing off the dolosses on the inside of the South Pier during a club competition.
According to Netcare 911 spokesperson, Chris Botha, when paramedics arrived at the scene they found he had been trapped between the support structures.
‘Medics set up a rope rescue system and then lowered themselves to the patient but tragically he sustained fatal injuries and died before the rescue team’s arrival.
‘The rescue paramedics secured a harness around the deceased and managed to pull him to the top of the pier and out of the high water mark.
‘The body was then handed over to the local police for further investigation,’ said Botha.
Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira confirmed that police have opened an inquest docket.
