THE 38th annual Richards Bay Ski Boat Club’s Fishing Bonanza was one for angler Riaan Steyn’s memory books.
He outcast, outfished and outmuscled 489 anglers to claim the bragging rights and first prize for 2016.
Steyn landed a 7.4kg Rubber Lip during the weekend’s competition, which proved testing owing to windy conditions.
Friday saw 137 boats take to the waters and hauling in some good catches, but on Saturday and Sunday the anglers were mostly restricted to shore because of the prevailing winds.
This made Friday’s catches vital.
Better conditions on Monday, however, allowed contestants to throw in the lines for the last time to try to win the grand prize.
Some great catches that were recorded, including four marlin weighing in at around 160kg which were tagged and released.
Wian Lategan had a successful Easter weekend, going home with the top junior angler award and the biggest Darodo prize.
In the Bay section, young Luke Meiring bagged the biggest salmon and biggest rock cod award.
