Angry community ‘moers’ a tsotsi

Community beat criminal almost to death

IRATE Port Durnford ward 18 community members almost beat a suspected criminal to death after he was caught wearing stolen clothing on Wednesday.

The young man was caught wearing clothing stolen from a household in the area.

uMhlathuze Municipality ward 18 Cllr, Sipho Mthiyane, confirmed the incident.

‘I received a call on Wednesday evening around seven saying a man was being beaten up by angry community members, accusing him of theft.

‘The police and I tried to intervene, but the irate community members refused to heed requests to exercise restraint,’ Mthiyane said.

‘The police were able to eventually calm them down, and the badly injured man was rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital for treatment.

‘People must rather report cases of stolen property and house break-ins to the p;olice instead of taking the law into their own hands. People assaulting suspects will be arrested instead of the criminals.’
