The voice of freedom

After impressing judge Kahn Morbee with his performance of George Ezra’s Blame it on Me, James secured a spot on Kahn’s team alongside a number of other hopeful contestants.

WITH an opportunity to kick-start his professional music career, local musician James Theunissen is gearing up for a life-changing adventure after his successful audition on The Voice South Africa.

After impressing judge Kahn Morbee with his performance of George Ezra’s Blame it on Me, James secured a spot on Kahn’s team alongside a number of other hopeful contestants.

Going for the ‘all or nothing’ approach, James’ interest in music was sparked by his admiration of South African band Prime Circle’s lead singer Ross Learmonth during his childhood years on a farm outside Gingindlovu.

After matriculating from Felixton College in 2007, James studied business management and entrepreneurship at Varsity College in Durban North until 2013, before relocating to Ballito.

It was only after venturing down a difficult and dangerous path during his time at university that James rediscovered the true value of life, and soon his freedom from the stranglehold of life resulted in his stage name, James Freedom.

‘My life has never been the same since,’ said James.

‘I discovered our heavenly Father’s unconditional love and I’m so grateful that my family never gave up on me and supported me throughout it all.

‘That was when James Freedom was born.’

This life-changing path saw James revert back to his love of music and he is now performing full-time as he continues to make a name for himself.

Ready for the next stage of his journey on The Voice SA, James takes with him the emotions felt while walking onto the stage before the judges.

‘I don’t know that the future holds, but I’m most certain that music will always part of it.’
