IN a bid to encourage uMkhanyakude’s high school science teachers to continue performing at their best, the annual science teachers awards ceremony was held at Khulani Special School near Hluhluwe earlier this month.
Organised by the physical sciences subject advisers, P Sithole, D Malati and AS Nyawo, the aim of the ceremony was to award those teachers whose pupils achieved excellent results in the 2015 National Senior Certificate examinations.
Categories included schools that excelled in physical sciences and those with high pass rates in the subject.
Awards included schools with 100%, 90 – 99%, 80-89%, 70-79% pass rates, and distinctions.
Also recognised were excelling science clusters, schools that reached up to regional level in science expos, and the Christoph Meyer Maths and Science School that helps pupils improve their Matric maths and science results.
Teachers who achieved 100% pass rate included Mr Myeza of Mtwazi Combined, Mr Ngwezi of John Wesley Kosi Bay Private, Ms Hlatshwayo of Kwabamba High, Ms Manoko of Mshudu High and Mr Peter of Mtuba Christian Academy.
Best teachers of the year were Mr Mthembu and Mr Mnguni of Nkodibe High for obtaining 83%, five distinctions and three Bs in the subject.
Schools in the 90 – 99% range included Amandlethu High, Ingwavuma High and U-Tech High.
Those in the 80 – 89% category included Star of the Sea High, Ngazini High and Nkodibe High.
Schools in the 70 – 79% category included Sibhamu High, Mavela High and Vezobala High.
A total of 45 distinctions were achieved and 90 Bs.
Mr Ngcobo of KwaGxaba High won the Most Improved category, while Sizaminqubeko and Amandla high schools competed in the Regional Eskom Science Expo.
Mtubatuba won the Outstanding Science Cluster award for consistent science workshops, and Big Five False Bay for improved group collaboration.
