Threats of violence disrupt council

According to reports, guns were drawn at a council meeting in Melmoth

A SPECIAL sitting of the Mthonjaneni Municipal Council on Friday was adjourned after threats of violence erupted in the benches.

A source close told the Zululand Observer some councillors were threatened with firearms, but this could not be verified.

‘The police will now be called in to confiscate firearms before the next sitting of council,’ the source said.

Beleaguered Municipal Manager Raymond Mnguni could not confirm whether arguments ensued over council’s attempt to have him suspended.

The ZO reported last week that Mnguni had been given notice of the intention to have him suspended and gave him seven days to respond to issues raised in the letter.

He has since submitted a response, which council will now have to take into consideration before proceeding.

‘The Speaker adjourned the meeting because of some disagreements relating to council’s approach to certain issues,’ Mnguni said on Friday afternoon.

He would not clarify what these issues were, but denied that it had anything to do with his possible suspension.
