‘FOR as long as education remains a societal issue, we will continue to intervene in whatever way possible in our schools’.
This undertaking was given by the Deputy Mayor of uThungulu District Municipality, Nonhle Mkhulisi, during her visit to Amabuye Secondary School near Mpembeni Reserve, where she handed over school uniforms and bicycles to needy students.
‘While we agree that as governmental entities our priorities are to channel our energy to service delivery initiatives, we can’t become spectators when we see something wrong in our schools. We have an obligation to intervene, and this must not be regarded as interference.’
She said the government was doing everything possible to ensure that every child receives quality education, from Grade R to tertiary level.
‘It is a societal issue that requires the involvement of all of us as community members.
‘We are also here to fulfill our late former Deputy Mayor Thulani Mashaba‘s wish to support this school.
‘He identified some learners who needed support regarding school uniforms. So we are here to fulfill that objective.
‘We are not only coming with 36 school uniforms, but we also have ten bicycles to give to learners who live far away from the school in an attempt to improve punctuality.
Mkhulisi also used the opportunity to adopt the school and committed herself to donating sanitary pads for girls.
‘I personally commit myself to assisting the school in any way possible,’ she said.
