Man sentenced for attempted rape of cousin

THE Empangeni Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old Matshana man to eight years behind bars for the attempted rape and sexual assault of his nine-year-old cousin.

According to police, the man called his cousin to his room on 7 December 2014, promising her some chips.

He grabbed her and attempted to sexually assault her, but the young girl managed to flee.

‘The victim reported the incident to the elders in Matshana Reserve and a case was opened at the Empangeni SAPS,’ said KZN police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane.

‘The case was transferred to the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for investigation.

‘ After a thorough investigation, the man was arrested in March last year.’
