UPDATE: Nyoni escapee shot dead by police

The suspect who escaped after a shootout with police has been killed during another shootout

THE second suspect who escaped from the Nyoni SAPS station on Thursday after a shooting that left two policemen dead has also been shot dead by police.

The 18-year-old suspect, named as Senzo Dube by police, escaped from the holding cells shortly after a shootout between police and another detainee.

The first suspect, a 23-year-old house robbery suspect, was killed after shooting Warrant Officers Bekizitha Gumede (46) and Siza Nyandeni (56) in the head and chest with one of the officer’s firearms.

Both policemen died later in hospital.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, police were following up on information received on his whereabouts.

At around noon today in the Mandeni area, Dube was spotted by police and fled.

‘It is alleged that he was firing at the police, and the members returned fire,’ said Major Zwane.

Dube, who had originally been arrested on charges of house robbery, was killed.

According to Major Zwane police recovered a firearm in his possession.

His death brings the death toll of this prison escape saga to four.
