I WAS very shocked to read about the killing of senior citizens David and Ann Strauss in the Zululand Observer of 22 January.
I found it senseless and merciless that old citizens could be killed in such a brutal manner.
Why is it necessary to kill people after taking all their belongings?
Taking one’s belongings without his/her permission is a crime on its own but, at least, belongings are replaceable. Life is not replaceable.
This is shows that old people are not safe in our society.
There is a myth in our society that white people are rich and have everything to be taken away from them.
There is a myth in our black society that if you rob a bank or if you rob white people, it is more acceptable than robbing a black person.
People may even say ‘angintshontshi elokishini mina ngintshontshela abelungu’ and as a result white, old people are an easy target for such criminal activities.
We need to teach our children that this is only a myth.
Most white people are not rich, they are where they are because they worked hard like everyone should.
Crime is crime and should be condemned.
Killing a person is a crime, it does not matter whether the person is black or white.
When robbers sell things like televisions, DVD players and sometimes cars, people buy these items knowing exactly where they came from.
We are indirectly promoting such criminal activities.
Let us fight these criminal activities in our families and societies.
Let us not buy on the streets, because if we do so we are responsible for the killing of many people who are robbed and killed every day.
I hope the perpetrators are arrested and I wish we could see no colour in each other.
Different colours, one people, one blood, one life, one God.
May their souls rest in peace and my condolences to the family and all Zululanders.
Let us support the police, CPFs and everyone in fighting against crime.
To all the perpetrators I say crime does not pay. I wish God would open your eyes and you start changing your lives for the better.
Go to school and get a proper job to feed your family.
Robbing and killing people is not the way to go, ‘ake sibuyise Ubuntu ebantwini’.
Your mother is my mother, your child is my child, your granny is my granny.
